FAQs on Arthritis:

By Joseph Agnello, PT, Cert. MDT

What causes Arthritis?

Osteoarthritis is characterized by the inflammation, stiffness, and pain in your joints. It can develop naturally with age as a result of wear and tear of the cartilage tissue between your joints. This reduces the cushion and lubrication around your bones, which creates friction between two bones and causes the symptoms of arthritis, especially pain. Past injuries can trigger arthritis as well. This usually happens if the area didn’t heal properly or the affected part of the body has been consistently experiencing stress.

Rheumatoid arthritis shows similar symptoms to osteoarthritis, but it is an autoimmune disease and can happen without any voluntary triggers. The t-cells created by your body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joints and creates inflammation, which causes pain. This effect could sometimes happen throughout the entire body.

What are the symptoms of Arthritis?

Arthritis can exhibit a variety of different symptoms. It can be mild in some people and very strong in others. Osteoarthritis does not usually display any symptoms outside the joint. Symptoms of other types of arthritis might include:

  • The signs of joint inflammation (Fatigue, Fever, and Rash)
  • Pain
  • Swelling and stiffness
  • Tenderness
  • Redness
  • Warmth
